Iceland-born illustrator Siggi Eggertson’s work is tough to categorize. It’s similar to pixel art, with the repetition of various colored shapes being used to create a larger image. However, unlike pixel art, Eggertsson utilizes the shapes created by overlapping forms as details in his complex and beautiful illustrations.

I was immediately attracted to the use of clean type and noisy photography in the album art for Brian Gossett’s, The Heist Series. However, the series goes deeper than just the pretty covers, it also has a great concept. Gossett’s love for the heist film genre becomes apparent through his vast knowledge of the films’ scores and his ability to compile the compositions in a cohesive manner. Dark Night of The Soul, an upcoming collaboration from David Lynch, Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse, Flaming Lips, Gruff Rhys, Iggy Pop, Suzanne Vega, Black Francis, Vic Chesnutt, Julian Casablancas, Jason Lyttle, Nina Persson, and James Mercer, is set to release this summer. The album will be accompanied by a book, featuring 100 photos by Director David Lynch.

Letman (Job Wouters) has some great illustrative and hand-lettered work in his portfolio. It’s refreshing to see that many of his projects do not contain any digitally-rendered typefaces. I also really like the video project, ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ, in which Wouters has a lettering session with his nephew. It’s really interesting to see how children interpret the letters that they see.

Experimental Jetset is an incredible design studio in Amsterdam. Most of us recognize their work from Gary Hustwit’s documentary, Helvetica. This podcast, filmed at The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, reveals the backgrounds of the designers and some of the processes behind some of their iconic pieces (I had no idea that Experimental Jetset was behind the John&Paul&Ringo&George t-shirt designs until I saw this lecture).

The trailer for Spike Jonze’s big screen accompaniment to Maurice Sendak’s childhood classic, Where The Wild Things Are, has finally arrived. The cinematography looks incredible, I particularly liked the use of Arcade Fire’s Wake Up as the score for the preview.

On March 25, 2009, a collection of BMW Art Cars will be displayed in New York’s Grand Central Terminal. The exhibition will feature customized BMW’s by Frank Stella, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Robert Rauschenberg. The exhibition will also feature a short film about Robin Rhode’s Expression of Joy project.

Toca Me is a design studio that also organizes design events. They’ve got an impressive title sequence, which is the result of a collaborative effort by DVEIN and Alex Trochut. The sequence is a combination of CGI and actual footage of melting material. The DVEIN site has some great process photographs of the monograms being sculpted from what appears to be styrofoam.

Norton & Sons, Savile Row Bespoke tailors, were recently given a facelift by Moving Brands. The result is a visual combination of century-old craftsmanship and powerful contemporary graphic application. The BBC even did a short documentary on the re-brand.
