The talented folks at antrepo4.com are giving away a beta version of an all-caps font family that is, in their words, “A little industrial, little vintage, little condensed, little bold.” Public Gothic has a great old-school look that falls into the same category as typefaces like Univers Ultra Condensed, Trade Gothic, and Tungsten.

I was immediately attracted to the use of clean type and noisy photography in the album art for Brian Gossett’s, The Heist Series. However, the series goes deeper than just the pretty covers, it also has a great concept. Gossett’s love for the heist film genre becomes apparent through his vast knowledge of the films’ scores and his ability to compile the compositions in a cohesive manner. Experimental Jetset is an incredible design studio in Amsterdam. Most of us recognize their work from Gary Hustwit’s documentary, Helvetica. This podcast, filmed at The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, reveals the backgrounds of the designers and some of the processes behind some of their iconic pieces (I had no idea that Experimental Jetset was behind the John&Paul&Ringo&George t-shirt designs until I saw this lecture).

A friend of mine at BPM The Street told me about this new mix by Funky Good Time resident DJ, Bowls. The all-vinyl 80’s-themed boogie/disco/funk mix is sure to please audiences with a taste for the somewhat obscure, as well as those who take their music with a side of lightheartedness.

This book could practically be the textbook for a Typography class. It’s great that Massimo Vignelli is giving it away free on his website. The book is seperated into a theory section and a more concrete “rules” section. I appreciate Vignelli’s thoughts on the minimal use of typefaces, he states, “Out of thousands of typefaces, all we need are a few basic ones, and trash the rest.” There is also some great material addressing the use of grids in the layout process.

I really don’t like to get political, especially in a public forum. However, no matter who you voted for, history was created this week. Plus, Christopher David Ryan made this really nice illustrated poster, available for free download through his site.

Studies in Pen Art is a pamphlet published by William E. Dennis in 1914. It contains some very cool calligraphc styles as well as some inspiring lettering styles. Thankfully, it has been scanned and compiled as a PDF which you can download here.

Andrew Paglinawan recently released Quicksand, a rounded, sans-serif, extended font in seven different typefaces. There aren’t too many problems with this one, as opposed to most free fonts. The spacing is a bit uneven and the the s loses some fluidity as the weight increases, but other than that, it’s a very clean design.
