I was immediately attracted to the use of clean type and noisy photography in the album art for Brian Gossett’s, The Heist Series. However, the series goes deeper than just the pretty covers, it also has a great concept. Gossett’s love for the heist film genre becomes apparent through his vast knowledge of the films’ scores and his ability to compile the compositions in a cohesive manner. Dark Night of The Soul, an upcoming collaboration from David Lynch, Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse, Flaming Lips, Gruff Rhys, Iggy Pop, Suzanne Vega, Black Francis, Vic Chesnutt, Julian Casablancas, Jason Lyttle, Nina Persson, and James Mercer, is set to release this summer. The album will be accompanied by a book, featuring 100 photos by Director David Lynch.

The latest series of ads for Nike’s SB Custom series have tons of style. The photos, by Jon Humphries are both simple and complex. Each of the riders coordinate with the car that they are skating, not just using the color from the riders’ shoes, but their overall styles as well. The composition of each photo is individualized for the rider, but the series as a whole holds together perfectly. I also like the design of the “label” on the side of the ad. It feels scientific, and it makes each photo look like a specimen, which is a wonderful concept.

Photonium* has a Flickr set featuring some vintage Braun products, designed by Dieter Rams. A lot of these designs look like they could have been produced yesterday instead of decades ago. Danish photographer Kim Høltermand creates some incredible architectural images. He captures every interesting vantage point on each structure and emphasizes the sculptural qualities of his subjects.

I know that there are a ton of social image bookmarking sites on the web, but Dropular appeals to me more than any that I’ve seen. The overall design is minimal and clean, and there are several really nice UI features. The ability to drop an image into your pool without up/downloading anything or losing your place on a particular site is wonderful. Also, the arrow-key navigation is genius. They’re using a javascript that allows the user to jump from post to post and page to page smoothly using only the arrows on your keyboard, which saves my wrist from a world of hurt when I’m using the trackpad on my laptop at home.

Street artist / photographer JR’s recent work in Kenya is massive. Rooftops and trains were covered with huge images of Kiberan women. The images are so large that they are visible from space. I love how the photos on the trains line up with the photos on the slopes.

I love the collection of old neon lights in Las Vegas’s Boneyard. Seeing all of the various typefaces and colors reminds me of the work of Greg Lamarche.

Richard Nicholson created a photographic survey of a nearly-extinct artistic tool, the darkroom.  With the use of film drawing to a close, these rooms are becoming an oddity. Each one has its own personality and energy. It’s a bit sad to know that these rooms are rapidly becoming antiquated.

CNN is urging attendees to the inauguration of President Barack Obama to take pictures of the moment that he takes the oath. The resulting images will be compiled into a 3D Photosynth image, which will recreate the moment from all angles and distances.
