Kalle Gustaffson’s photography has a definite mid-century aesthetic. The make-up, fashion, and washed out, noisy colors are reminiscent of magazines from the 60’s. Also, the portfolio site design is pleasantly minimal.

Right now at the Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York, there are a series of 70 still-life polaroids by Andy Warhol on display. Photographed between 1977 and 1983, the subject matter ranges from a pair of ballet slippers to a pile of knives. I love the personality conveyed in these photos. Most of them are pretty humorous.

My Beautiful Disco is a photographic project by Luca Saini, documenting 777 subjects and their favorite vinyl. It’s kind of like those photos of people with their dogs that look like them.

Steven Meisel’s work for the Vogue Italia pattern series is incredible. The photos have a hand-colored feel, like the pin-ups from the psychedelic 60’s. The placement of tattoos on the models blends them seamlessly into the patterned fabric backgrounds. Art+Commerce is selling a limited edition of 1000 jigsaw puzzles featuring one of the photos, which features model Meghan Collison.

WellMedicated has compiled a great selection of Criterion Collection Box Designs. Many Hollywood blockbuster-type films feature great photography or renderings, but the typography appears to be an afterthought. Either type is awkwardly placed, is effected in a ridiculous manner, or is just boring. The Criterion Collection box designers go the extra mile to make sure that image and type are married seamlessly through style and concept.

Check out these great slides from a 1975 IBM presentation. I particularly like the information graphics. See more slides here.

Schlieren (German for “streaks”) Photography makes invisible gases appear as shadows as their density increases. It allows scientists to visualize disturbances in the air and has been quite useful in the aeronautics field. Now this technique is being used to study the spread of airborne diseases. Isolated Building Studies: Revealing Meaning Through Recontextualization is a thought-provoking, sociological project which explores architectural remnants of Chicago’s past. I’m glad that someone has taken the time to recognize the visual impact that buildings like these carry.
