J.R. Geigy was a Swiss chemical company in the  50’s and 60’s. Their in-house designers played an integral role in the history of the Swiss International style. The company’s designs recently received quite a spotlight, via an exhibition at the Design Museum Zurich and the publication of Corporate Diversity : Swiss Graphic Design by Geigy. One would think that designs like these would require the use of Helvetica, but the Akzidenz Grotesk typeface was undeniably successful in many of the designs.

James Provost, a technical illustrator, recently completed a poster featuring his renderings of iconic mid-century modern furniture. The style is inherently minimal, and the textured shadows add a vintage feel to the illustrations. You can buy a giclee print, featuring all of the pieces, from imagekind.

I really love the Jeanne Moderno typeface, designed by Steve Mehallo. This face can be described as:

“A synthesis of Bodoni Italic and 19th Century Ultra-Bold ‘Fat Faces’ – distilled with personality taken from early 20th Century Modernists; the Futurists, Dadaists, Suprematists, Constructivists.” – Steve Mehallo

This typeface also has some of the sexiest numbers that I’ve ever seen, especially the 5 and the 3.

Steven Meisel’s work for the Vogue Italia pattern series is incredible. The photos have a hand-colored feel, like the pin-ups from the psychedelic 60’s. The placement of tattoos on the models blends them seamlessly into the patterned fabric backgrounds. Art+Commerce is selling a limited edition of 1000 jigsaw puzzles featuring one of the photos, which features model Meghan Collison.

Hard Graft has a line of fashionable products that cater to the Apple crowd. All of the products are made from leather and wool, but my favorite detail is the herringbone pattern elastic, used for the straps.
